It may be down the road a bit, but keep your ears open for the soundtrack to the '70s glam rock feature film Velvet Goldmine. The movie, which is being executive- produced by Michael Stipe's production company Single Cell Pictures and music supervised by Randy Poster (Kids, I Shot Andy Warhol), is in pre- production now, and probably won't be released for another year, according to a spokesperson at the L.A.- based Single Cell, which Stipe formed about two years ago.

However, it's never too early to get started on the music for the movie. In a New York recording studio today (Feb. 20) are the Wilde Rattz, better known individually as Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley, Mark Arm of Mudhoney, Mike Watt, and Ron Asheton of the Stooges with Don Fleming producing. They are recording the bulk of the music for the soundtrack, which will feature Stooges covers including "I Wanna Be Your Dog." It will also include two new songs penned by Asheton. And Grant Lee Buffalo is in an L.A. studio this week recording their contribution to the soundtrack.

Todd Haynes (Poison) is directing the movie, which is loosely based on Iggy Pop and David Bowie and stars Trainspotting star Ewan McGregor and Toni Colette of Muriel's Wedding. The movie is to begin shooting in London in March.
