mudhoney news

2003

Mudhoney will open from the one and only legendary rock'n'roll hero Bo Diddley! The show is scheduled for January 2 at the Seattle Showbox.

On March 7th they will play there again, this time with the Melvins.

Thanks to Philip for the info.

Some recent record suggestions from Mark: The new Nebula record is pretty rockin'. Eddie played bass on it.

I haven't heard the new Wellwater Conspiracy record yet (I need to get to the store).

The new Country Teasers on In The Red is mighty fine.

You may remember about September's Mojo review of the reissued & expanded "Piece Of Cake" and "My Brother The Cow" CD's [see related news]. That article came with a band picture, whose caption said, "My A6R doesn't understand me". This month's Mojo (#120 and 10th anniversary issue) hosts the following mail from Mark in the Letters section:

I'm somehow baffled by the caption which accompanies the Mudhoney photo in your latest issue (#118). David Katznelson. our A&R person at Reprise, fought long and hard on our behalf. He was (and remains) a true friend. If anyone at Reprise understood us, it was David. Besides, "understanding" isn't something that we expected from a record label, "freedom" is. David has since left the major label world and started up several labels of his own (check out www.thebirdmangroup.com) which champion artistic freedom. Let there be no doubt: David Katznelson is one righteous motherfucker.

There are various new things in the press page, covering almost each step of the band's career. The first one is a pre-Mudhoney piece from a February '88 issue of Backlash. Then there's the infamous "dark metal" interview from the EGBDF era which appeared on the Italian magazine Rumore. Documenting the MBTC release is another interview, taken from an old issue of the legendary Danish fanzine Moshable. There's a bunch of new stuff from the THT period too, including a lenghty Flipside interview, and Mark Arm's feature on Bob Bert's BB Gun fanzine (the issue with poor Elliot Smith on the cover, which I scanned the very same day he would take his life). Finally, I've collected almost all the emails I got from the guys when Jam asked for an interview for the release of SWBT. Have fun.

The Wylde Ratttz cover of "T.V. Eye" will be included on the soundtrack for the movie "School Of Rock". The record will come out on Atlantic.

[Sep 23]

I ran into mister Mike Watt at a show the other night, and guess what? He says the Wylde Ratttz record is finally coming out. I've heard this rumor hundred times in the past years, but this time it came from Watt himself, and with the whole Iggy And The Stooges reunion thing going on, this could be really it.

Here's some comments from Mark about some recent news:

I found out about ["Piece of Cake" and "My Brother the Cow" reissues] from a friend of mine [Keith Cameron] who writes for Mojo. He called me to ask about them because he was going to write something on these for the magazine. He had to tell me what was going to be on them. Warners has not contacted us.

[I have typed down Mojo's interview with Mark here]
Jason [Ziemniak] asked me to write & record a song from a title he gave me. It sounded like a fun little project so I marched down to the basement and recorded "Coke limo" on the 4-track.

[Aug 23]

From Jason Ziemniak:

I'm putting out a compilation CD where I gave a musician a song title and they wrote the song. Mark Arm did a song called "Coke limo". Other musicians that participated include Thurston Moore, Mike Watt, Johnette Napalitano, Nels Cline and Neil Fallon. There are 22 songs in all. It is available through my website: http://www.chromepeeler.com for $10ppd.

Ex Headcoatee Holly Golightly, propelled into some well deserved mainstream fame (after about ten albums that went almost completely unnoticed) by her collaboration with the White Stripes, had the following to say when asked about her currently favourite music:

"I've been playing Steve Turner's solo record - it's the only contemporary record I've got."

So one more good reason to go out and get Steve's "Searching For Melody" LP.

[Aug 20]

Reprise UK is releasing CD reissues of "Piece of Cake" and "My Brother the Cow", both with bonus tracks and extra artwork. The new "Piece of Cake" now also includes "Over the top", "King sandbox", "Baby o baby" and the entire "Five Dollar" EP, while "My Brother the Cow" gets the six short sketches off the bonus 7" which came with the original vinyl version of the album plus "Not goin' down that road again".

Updates from Mark:

There's not much news at the moment. We have 3 new songs. One is recorded and is coming out on a Buddyhead comp (check out www.buddyhead.com). We're playing a handful of shows in the pacific northwest and in California. We haven't had much time to work on new shit, which is a bit frustrating, but what can you do, right?

[Steve and me] have been playing in bands together non-stop now for 20 years this month!

[Aug 6]

In a new article Mark talks about some new songs that will be premiered at a gig in Bellingham on August 8.

[Jul 30]

I am moving out of town and there will be no computer in my new home. So I'm afraid I won't be able to update the website on a regular basis for a while. Please refer to www.muddclubb.com for a better show schedule.

Steve Turner's first solo album is coming out today on the spanish label Houston Party. An american edition on Rosalyn records is expected, although its release date is still unknown.

Steve Turner: "Searching for melody" 6 de Mayo. HPR081. (CD)
El guitarrista de Mudhoney es uno de los responsables del rock n' roll y la explosión grunge en los 90. Ahora vuelve con un álbum en solitario que mantiene toda la esencia de su música anterior pero con una orientación mucho más blues y folkie.

Steve also has various shows scheduled in Spain. He will probably fly over to the UK for some gigs there, too.

[May 6]

As a new addition to their catalog of official Mudhoney merchandise, Kung Fu has reissued the legendary "Big Muff" t-shirt. If you can have just one tee, it has to be that one!

powerHouse Books is pleased to announce the November 2003 release of:

Touch Me I'm Sick

Photographs by Charles Peterson

Introduction by Eddie Vedder
Essay by Jennie Boddy

Featuring 92 photographs—eighty of them never published before—spanning 16 years, Touch Me I'm Sick, Peterson's third monograph, documents the raw power of live performances by the soon-to-be-famous artists and their dedicated fans. Yet, Peterson's photographs do not rely on the cult of celebrity to tell this compelling tale of angst, anxiety, and acoustics. Rather, they capture the cathartic ritual between musician and fan played out in seedy clubs reeking of sweat and stale beer. Bored, alienated youth with nothing better to do than bash their instruments and mosh their bodies in a barrage of sound, song, and furious energy are mirrored with his signature style of wide-angle intimacy, swirling lights, and a strange sense of grace. Peterson, who became known mostly for his signature style "blur", exploited by use of the open shutter flash technique, capturing bands at the height of their intensity. Marvels of controlled chaos and swirling lights, his live photographs plucked spontaneous beauty from the tumult of a rock show, revealing the depth and honesty of its most unguarded moments.

Featuring photographs of grunge legends Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Sleater Kinney, Mudhoney, Sonic Youth, L7, Hole, and Black Flag, among others, as well as excerpts from Your Flesh, Flipside, Melody Maker, B-side, Swellsville, and Chemical Imbalance, Touch Me I'm Sick is the perfect mix of art and journalism for music purists and connoisseurs.

According to Mark, Mudhoney have three new songs ready and are currently working on new material. "The difficulty is working practices around eveyone's schedules". In the meantime, you can download their latest tune, "Hard on for war", from the Protest Records website.

Also, there are some plans to bring Tim Kerr in Seattle this fall in order to complete the new Monkeywrench album (for which about six tracks were recorded last year). "You may have heard that Tim broke his leg at a Total Sound show during SXSW last month. I was there. It was pretty freaky".

Mudhoney have not future tour plans, nor they will participate to european summer festivals. Steve will soon be back in Spain and England though.

[Apr 20]

Thurston Moore has recently started a new online label, Protest Records (www.protest-records.com), whose intent is to distribute mp3's of protest songs by both famous bands and unknowns acts. Mudhoney will contribute with a new song, "Hard on for war" which should be online in a matter of days (a diffrent mix will be issued later on a CD compilation). Other artists who have sent in material to the project so far include Ian McKaye, Cat Power, Eugene Chadbourne, Jim O'Rourke, the Beastie Boys and Damon & Naomi.

From the Sub Pop website:
2003 marks Sub Pop's 15th anniversary, and we're putting together a compilation to commemorate the event. Terminal Sales (Sub Pop's offices were originally located in the "Terminal Sales Bldg." here in Seattle) will be a two-disc set spanning 1988 to the present, featuring a very subjective chronological collection of "greatest hits and rarities" (including a slew of as-yet-unreleased-on-CD tracks, many issued originally as part of the infamous Sub Pop Singles Club). Among others, Terminal Sales will include tracks from: Sebadoh, Beachwood Sparks, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Shins, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Iron & Wine, Soundgarden, The White Stripes, Ugly Casanova, Les Savy Fav, Hot Hot Heat, Rapeman, Nirvana, The Murder City Devils, Bright Eyes, and Ween.

[Mar 20]

Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter/Steve Turner "Moon Over Troubled Town" b/w "Nothing but the Blues" and "People Take Trips" (BBB007) Split 7" record will be out April 5 on Burn Burn Burn.

[Mar 19]

Steve premiered some new songs during his show last night in London, and said that his album is coming out on the Loosemusic label in May

[Mar 2]

Mudhoney appears on the "Up yours! Punk's not dead" compilation coming with the March issue of the UK music magazine Mojo with a live cover of Hawkwind's "Urban guerilla" taken from the 9 Sep 02 Peel Session.
